Short Story : Imaginary

One day, a girl named Avery found herself walking around a forest. The sunlight showered her long brunette hair from behind the canopy. Forests' animals were just doing what they were supposed to do. She herself had no idea what she was doing there. So she decided to just keep walking, and inhaled the fresh air from the trees.
It didn't take much time until a stag passed by her. Its eyes met hers, like it was trying to tell her something. In a blink of an eye, the stag ran away from her.
Avery hesitated. Should I followed it? What if I got lost? Avery thought to herself. But she also didn't know the way back home, so she decided to follow the stag.
Avery felt so exhausted from chasing the stag. It just missed from the thick trunks in front of her. With the rest of her strenght, she tried to pass the trees. Seconds later, she was amazed by the view.
In front of her was a beautiful large lake, extended as far as she could see. The water glistened from the sunlight. She already forgot about what happened moments ago --what was she chasing for? She was about to sit, enjoying the scenery, when she spotted a raft in the middle of the lake. It came closer to her, until seconds later, it already approached the dock.
A girl with a sleeveless white dress came down from the raft, walking towards Avery. She was about the same age as Avery; the same height, same complexion, and the same hair, but with the most beautiful appearance of her version that she could imagine. The only flaw from her image was her sour face.
"Hello," said the girl, still frowned. "Do you know me?"
It was really strange. Avery thought she recognized her somehow, although she would've sworn that she'd never been face-to-face before.
"Sorry, I really hope I can. But..." Avery didn't continue her words.
"There. My expectation is true. You recognize me no more," she looked even sadder, then continued,
"Once, a girl made me alive. She was the most brilliant girl I've ever met. She made me her best friend, even her sister. She talked to me when she was lonely. She always shared her feelings to me, whether it was something good or bad. You know what? I loved her very much, even when the other think she is nut."
Avery was shocked. Could it be her?
Tears were streaming down Avery's cheeks. Of course it was her! How could she forget that?
"You... you are Alice. But how could you be here? I mean, you're not supposed to be real." said Avery.
Then Alice's expression softened. She said, "Indeed. I am real. But only in your mind, my dear Ave. I'm happy that finally you remember me."
"It's been a very long time since the last time we see each other. You know what, Ave? I missed the times when we were together. I know exactly what burdens that you carry, what do you feel when your friends abandon you. I'm the only one who knows what it's like to be you. I always be by your side."
"But look at yourself now. Since you moved to the new high school, you've changed a lot. You made lots of new friends. I can't said how proud I am to you. I'm really happy for you. You don't have to mourn over your parents' death anymore. No one will ever call you freak. But that means a consequence for me. I have to leave sooner or later..."
"... Your new friends soon become your best friends. You are always together in every occasion..."
"... I'm not mad. Not even sad. Just... is it wrong to give my best companion a proper goodbye? I only want to see my Ave grow up into a mature girl. Go and reach your dream. Never be afraid. Believe."
Avery was speechless. Her eyes were bloodshot, and she kept weeping. Alice was pretty much everything she got before. But afterall, she was only her imaginary friend. Sounds freak, but that was what she is. She couldn't be alive. She would only be in her mind.
"Is it real? Or is it just me and my imagination?" asked Avery.
"It's all real, as long as you think that way. But for now... you're going to know soon."
Slowly, Alice's face was fading. Her body dissolved into black fog, and everything was gone.
Avery woke up and found herself sitting on a chair in her study room. She was holding an old diary of hers. Written on the pages were the stories about her and Alice, her old friend that only existed inside her mind.
"Alice... " she whispered. "I'm sorry."
